Merry Meet! This is the first post of a series that I will be sharing with you over the next year. There will be other posts from me in between, but if you want to explore some ideas, symbolism, inspiration and a deeper look into the Wheel of the Year, come join me Fridays as I delve into each sabbat. As the Wheel is a cyclical, I am setting my starting point for this blog series to line up with where we are right now, heading toward Eostara. For the next 5 weeks there will be a post about Eostara, beginning with this one which includes a portion of my version of The Wheel of the Year story.

The story is to help you get an overall sense of what each sabbat is about. The posts after this for Eostara (and subsequent other posts) will include some history & fun facts (including magical symbolism and connections), as well as what I feel a particular sabbat means to me – what I get out of it spiritually, and how Spiral Grove Coven celebrates the sabbat in Ritual. And so without further adieu, here follows the Story of Eostara as the Wheel Turns….

The Wheel turns toward Eostara, the Vernal Equinox, when day and night at long last are balanced, and Winter releases its final hold giving way to Spring. The Goddess as Fertile, Vibrant Maiden sings and dances up new buds and blossoms among the trees and bushes. Increasingly, more animals give birth, and life is fully renewed as witnessed by rabbits and chicks literally springing forth across the land. The God is a young man, growing stronger, as witnessed by the first shoots of bright green grass, and new antlers growing upon deer across the land. Fertility has awoken and life begins to burst out of its winter shell. The Earth is Alive with Possibilities and New Beginnings. Blossoms dripping with pollen await the time when their trees will soon bear fruit. While the sun still has far to go to reach its apex in strength and light, there is no longer a hold of darkness over light, they are at last equal Yet with this equality, soon to follow will be a shift, where in the light takes over the dark as the Waxing of the year continues and the darkness loosens its grip.

The Goddess and God are growing into adulthood and are now aware of their sexuality and their potential for the abundance of life. Their courtship begins but is not yet consummated, there is love in the air and anticipation arises. The Earth is fertile and full of life for the first time since winter held its icy grip. New seeds are ready to be planted in preparation of the year’s growth and harvest. Every flower that blooms is of the Goddess and a direct reflection of her beauty and vitality. Every seedling that grows reflects the miracle of life and strength encased within one small part of life energy. All the shades of green which have taken over what was once brown or grey are of the Young God, reflecting his youth and growth toward manhood. The Goddess and God are fertile with new beginnings and this is witnessed through a cacophony of color and song across the land.

The Children of Earth cleanse and renew their altars, homes and themselves with ritual sacrifices, opening the way for new abundance to come into their lives. As Spring is the beginning of growth and increasing fertility upon the Wheel, many tribes of the Children of Earth offer seeds and personal tokens to the Goddess and God so they may gain their own fertility in return, be it fertility of the body, mind or spirit. They celebrate the glorious colors and life that the Goddess and God have brought forth with their own brightly colored eggs and altars, for they know from the egg, life grows into birth and fruition. They seek the beauty of nature all around in field and forest. The Children of Earth celebrate the balance of light and dark, day and night, male and female. They know the potential for abundance is just around the corner, that soon the earth will be burgeoning with the fertile fruits of growth and profusion. The Children of Earth plant their Spring gardens, knowing they will reap the rewards of their labor in the Autumn with the Harvest to come.

The Children of Earth witness the beginning of new life before them through the courtship of birds, blooming of flowering plants and the return of warmth from the Sun, as the Light gains energy over the Dark. The Children of Earth celebrate the renewal of energy from the fertility that abounds before them; nurturing new ideas, new beginnings, and the renewal of life that dances within themselves. This is what Eostara is about, Welcoming the renewal of Life upon the Earth and the burgeoning growth that has begun. The Earth is Fertile with Potential as the Wheel Turns once more…

Merry Meet! I am first and foremost a writer. When I am writing I am in my element! Much of what I write about, and do in my life is centered around a pagan spiritual base. I have been studying various paths and topics, working with energies, deities, and the elements for 15 years plus. I am the High Priestess of Spiral Grove an eclectic study coven. I say I was given this coven as a gift because that is what it truly is. Spiral Grove would not be what it is without the members who make it whole.
